During this stage, a group consisting of development and IT operations teams, as well as other stakeholders, come together to identify the desired features for the project. Each feature is given an iteration value and criteria for the project phase. It is important for all relevant parties, including developers, system administrators, product management, marketing staff, and technical writers, to be involved in this process to ensure a successful development plan
During the code phase, developers are responsible for carrying out their assigned coding tasks. Once they complete these tasks, they submit their work to a centralized source code repository, such as GitLab or GitHub, which serves as the definitive source for the project’s code. All code must be checked into this repository to ensure accurate tracking and documentation
During the build phase, software code is retrieved from the centralized repository using an automated tool like Chef or Puppet. This tool then compiles the code into a binary artifact, runs functional tests, and publishes the artifact to a shared centralized repository. This process ensures that the code is properly compiled and tested before it is shared with the rest of the team
After a successful build, the resulting artifact is automatically deployed to a staging environment for further testing. This staging environment may be an existing hosting service or it may be a new environment created specifically for the deployment process. This practice of using code to manage infrastructure, known as Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), is a key component of many DevOps pipelines and helps ensure that the deployment process is consistent and repeatable.
The Release phase marks an important milestone in a DevOps pipeline, as it signifies that a build is ready to be deployed to the production environment. By the time a build reaches this phase, it has undergone a range of manual and automated tests to ensure that it is stable and free of regressions. The operations team can have confidence that any breaking issues have been identified and addressed before the build is released to the production environment.
After all necessary testing and validation has been completed, a build is ready to be released into the production environment. There are various tools and processes that can automate the release process to ensure smooth and reliable deployments with minimal downtime.
Using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) to build both the test and production environments can help ensure that the production release will be successful, as the same IaC configuration that was used to build the test environment can be applied to build the production environment. Since the test environment was built successfully, we can have confidence that the production release will go smoothly as well.
The operations team is responsible for ensuring that the production environment is running smoothly. Depending on the configuration of the hosting service, the environment may be able to automatically scale to accommodate changes in the number of active users, such as during peak traffic times. This helps to ensure that the service remains available and responsive to users at all times.
The final phase of the DevOps cycle is monitoring the environment. This phase builds upon the customer feedback collected during the Operate phase by gathering data and analyzing customer behavior, performance, errors, and other relevant information.
In addition to monitoring the environment, it is also important to examine the DevOps pipeline itself and identify any potential bottlenecks that may be causing delays or impacting the productivity of the development and operations teams. By continuously monitoring and improving the pipeline, we can optimize the entire DevOps process and ensure a smooth and efficient workflow.
